I'm really liking the new album from Kanye West titled 808s & Heartbreak. This album is a little more industrial sounding and he uses the vocal doubler and tuner on most songs. It's still Kanye and it's still got catchy hooks. Get this one.

Another strong album from The Killers titled Day & Age. Known for their arrangements and rock out times during the songs, and this one keeps that going. I think it's their best songs yet.

From CFNI to Gateway, now to release her own album. You have to check out Kari Jobe and the new single titled I'm Singing. The same voice that made Revelation Song famous is the same voice that has lead thousands into worship. Look for the full album to be released soon.

In honor of my sister Julie, check out Red and the new single titled Fight Inside. A strong arrangement and great vocals make this a song to get and a album to wait for.

A little different post today on Sunday Update. I was not at LFA on Sunday but, I was eating some great food and spending time with my wonderful wife's family in Dallas. I got a early start on Thanksgiving!

Ricky Luis lead worship at LFA and I was told by many that he did a great job.

- I could not stop thinking about LFA

I force myself to take some Sunday's off during the year. I tend to work to much and not put my family first. I am glad to have a Pastor who encourages me to put my family before ministry. He has been a great example for me to follow.

Just a few selections for you today. Lets first start with David Cook, Mr. American Idol...Yea I know you might really like him, but I liked him more on the show than the David Cook on the new album. Just me...

Beyonce, yea I said Beyonce. This is a power to the woman album, and it really shows off her talent. I just wish she would try some of Leona Lewis kind of arrangements.

I'm getting into Christmas music, I know its a little early. I'm listening to Harry Connick Jr. and the Christmas album from Newsong. You can not really go wrong with Christmas music unless it's Amy Grant...

It is always refreshing to try new things. New places to eat, new things to watch, new things to do. I really think that "church" could try some new things, and I think worship guys should try some new things.

I am surrounded by some talented, anointed people at LFA. I am so thankful for the team that I get to lead with each week. Today I tried something new. Ricky lead a great new song this morning and he killed! I have other people sing a verse on other songs, but not lead the song. Ricky leads from the acoustic guitar, and can really sing well. He lead "You Saw Me" from Hillsong, and did great.

Pastor delivered a great message this morning, and after the message we did "It Is Well With My Soul". It was awesome to see hands lifted all over the church. God did some amazing things this morning.

Check out David Archuleta from American Idol. It's a great new album that features his sick vocals. I still think he should of won, and with this new album he is showing why.

Another young star to check out is Taylor Swift and the new album Fearless. I'm not a big fan of country, but it's more of a pop-country album. The coolest thing is she wrote every song on the album.

You need to check out Glorious Unseen and the album The Cries of the Broken. Josh Modisette got me into these guys and I'm glad he did. It's a great worship album with some great songs. Check out "Hear Our Prayers" and "Forever Holy".

Sunday Update

Today we focused on missions. I am proud to say that we support every missionary in the North Texas District. We are the 15th most giving church out of 535 in North Texas District. Something we focus on and our people are so giving!

It was great to have Pastor Carter back. He has missed the last two weeks. Andrew did a great job speaking the last two weeks, but there is no one like Pastor.

We missed Eddie (electric guitar) but worship was great.

We slowed down Jesus Messiah from 86 bpm down to 82 bpm. That change made it easier to sing and worship to, at least that's what a few people said to me after service.

The king of Christmas music, yes its that time of year already, Harry Connick Jr. has a new one out. What A Night! is filled with some new and old favorites, pop this one on and get ready for Christmas!

Staying in the Christmas theme, Sarah Brightman and her new album titled Winter Symphony. You will love her crisp vocals and a little different twist on the arrangements of some traditional songs.

Nothing new here, just the hits from Switchfoot all on one album. The Best Yet is one to get if you just love you some Switchfoot.

After a long weekend of Light House Adventure and the day after, we had a great Sunday service! Pastor Andrew killed the message once again, and has just really communicated well the message series Church Killers.

Worship was crazy good. I kept hearing so many people say that they just needed worship today. I am so thankful for the team coming ready to see what God is going to do! Amazing!

Today was communion Sunday, and we did it right in the middle of Revelation Song. It was so different and fresh. Communion should be a part of our worship, it is worship.

Just wanted to update you on our Light House Adventure Friday night. Instead of having a fall fest at our church we had 3 fall fest in neighborhoods. All homes were stead with traffic, but one had a traffic jam right in front of the home, and the other got crazy busy at 9 pm. I had some thoughts that it was a bad idea at first, but then families started showing up. We stayed at the homes much later than expected because of all the people. It was an amazing outreach and thanks again to all the great volunteers who made it happen! I will get the video on the blog soon.

Light House Adventure

Around this time of year families are getting ready to go door to door and get some candy with their kids. Kids that are dressed up as many different things. Churches host "Fall Fest" or "Trunk N Treats" on their property and usually have games, food, and candy to give away.

Some months ago I heard of the idea called "Light The Night", and I knew our church had to do it. Last year we did not do anything, no fall fest, nothing. This year I was going to make sure we did something.

Friday night we are sending 30 - 40 volunteers to 3 homes in Longview. We are going to be having small "Fall Fest" at each home. Bounce houses, games, food, candy. Each home will have bright lights so you can see the home from space. We are doing this for safety and for advertisement.

We will be giving away a XBOX 360 that each kid will have the chance to win. The catch is that they have to be present on Sunday, November 2 at LFA to win. Just another way to get the families into our church after the event. We are expecting salivations to happen on front yards right beside games and bounce houses.

Please pray for this event and the other 90 ish people that are going to pull this off. I will update you on the event this weekend.

Smooth voice and killer piano arrangements make this new album from John Legend titled Evolver one to get. Some big names join him on this one: Kanye West, Will.i.am of Black Eyed Peas, and Andre 3000 from Outkast.

You need to check out Snow Patrol and the new album titled A Hundred Million Suns. I have always been impressed with their musicianship, and it really shows on this new album. If your a fan you already have it, and if you don't know who they are this cd is the place to start to get to know their music.

New album from Switchfoot front man Jon Foreman titled Limbs and Branches. He has released a couple of solo albums and all will not disappoint. Same great vocals with new and unique arrangements. Check it out.

Since I have neglected my blog for so long, let me give you some updates.

Last Thursday I have the opportunity to play in a golf tournament at Cowboys Golf Club. It was my first time to play the course and what a course it is! Amazing, tough, beautiful...

I won some great prizes and I gave a putter to Andrew, shirts to Pastor and I kept everything else.

Saturday I worked on the music room. New furniture from Ikea, next is painting and new lights. I will post the pictures when I am done.

Sunday Andrew had the opportunity to speak because of Pastor Carter being out of town. He spoke about "The Killer of the Church." It was a creative message, and he delivered it well. By the way, today is his birthday so wish him a good one!

We had a great rehearsal with the team in the morning. Then all we hear is this loud static sound. I mean shake the room loud...not in a good way. We powered down the amps hoping we did not lose any equipment. I am glad to say we didn't, but I still don't know what happened.

So when service came around, all I could think about was it happening during the service. I was so distracted, but the service went well and no problems with the system. I am having some guys come and check things out this week to see what happened.

I've been a fan of Skillet for many years. Love their sound and they are cool because they have a chick drummer. The new album titled Comatose Comes Alive is such a strong loaded one. Great songwriting with great arrangements.

Check out Building 429 and the new album. Their distinct sound will be found on this new cd and they have stepped out into a little different arrangement styles. I think it is one to get.

You have to check out The 88 and their new album titled Not Only...But Also. Chances are you have already heard their music but you may not know it. Many of their catchy melodies are used in TV shows and promos. They have a old school meets new school sound that sticks with you. One to get.

If you are a fan Jason Mraz or Jack Johnson then you will like Brett Dennen and his new cd titled Hope For The Hopeless. He has a great sound and unique vocals, but he also has a inspiring message through his music.

If you like hard hitting rock, then check out Disciple. The new album is titled Southern Hospitality. A little more commercial than their past albums, but still the same rock sound.

Never been a big fan of Mary Mary, but I can't denial the great harmonies. Everyone loves great harmonies right? Same sounding album as their last, and middle of the road arrangements. Not going on my iPhone, but you may like it.

Sunday Update

I always look forward to Sundays. I try to lay low on Saturday and make sure I get some rest. I try to be prepared for what may happen. This Sunday was a difficult one. We had a great practice in the morning, but when it came time for the service things went downhill.

First my keyboard was out of tune (long story), then Jeff our bass player had some trouble with his bass. No signal during the entire first song along with a out of tune keyboard equals total FAIL.

I got my keys back in order and switched out the DI box for the bass and then we were off. It ended up being a great service despite the problems. I think we could be distracted on Sundays like today, but the team remained focused on what God wanted to do! I am blessed to have such a great team.

I have stayed away from this subject till now. Everyone has an opinion so here's mine...

I only watched 20 minutes of the debate last night, but that's all it took. This trend goes back to the 1992 debates. I found myself watching a little CSPAN and watched the debate from that election. A guy named Bill Clinton was promising the moon and a hick named Ross Perot was a straight talker, and the original Bush was the man in charge.

Same subjects: economy; energy; taxes; reform; lies...

Leaders think that they need to give such a huge vision for people to buy into. Just like in 1992, the vision is aimed to the people, not the potential of the leader. People are sick of over-promising and under-delivering.

We are in a great place as leaders in the church. So many are looking for a leader they can trust. Washington is doing a great job giving leaders a bad name. Let us be the leaders people can trust in.

Next time you start promising the moon to people, change it to just reach the clouds. Then bring people with you to the clouds, and the moon will be in reach.

Stay true to what God has spoken to you, don't change it to please people. You won't please them, you will only tick them off.

A favorite song writer of my wife and I is Ingrid Michaelson. The new album does not disappoint. Acoustic driven folk style rock with great tunes. Check out the great new track titled Be Ok.

Keane has a great new album out titled Perfect Symmetry. It is a great rock/pop cd but they have stepped a little farther out into some new arrangement styles. I think it's a great one to get. Some great tracks are Better Than This; You Don't See Me; and Pretend That You're Alone.

For all you country fans, you need to check out Kenny Chesney and his new album Lucky Old Sun. This 2 cd album includes 4 bonus live tracks.

You have got to get Jon McLaughlin's new album titled Ok Now. Piano lead pop album is full of great writing and great arrangments. This is one to get.

After having 2 weeks off from leading worship it was great to be back with the team this past Sunday. Taking time off makes you really appreciate the team God has blessed you with. I also know that there is nothing more I would rather do than lead worship.

That's all we did, and it was a great service. God moved in such a powerful way on our hearts.

It was a different service because we it was the last Sunday for our Children Pastor. He has served LFA for over 16 years. That is awesome. He will be greatly missed by many families. I know God is leading us through this time of transition and I am excited about Jon and Diana being a part of the staff. They have the heart to be full time in ministry and we are needing that from our Children Pastors. Ask this guy about how important a quality Children's ministry is.

Pastor shared a great message about seeing yourself the way God sees you. Here are some of my notes:

Accept the way God has made us; have a true estimation of yourself

Find out who God wants you to be; be the best you, not someone else.

We must turn to God; helping others kills selfishness

I am truly blessed to be used by God, and I am blessed to have such a great team!

The Day After

If you have ever planned a large event, you know what I mean by The Day After. Or maybe I could explain it by thinking about the day after your birthday. That day only comes once a year, and it seems to go by so quickly. The day after seems to last forever.

I am the kind of person who likes day afters. I enjoy thinking about everything that happened, how it happened, and how to make it better next time. Today is my day after from vacation.

Branson was great to reconnect with family and to refresh. It was great spending time with my brother as well. Amy has some great pictures here. No shows for us just good food, shopping, and beautiful landscape.

The day after teaches us to enjoy life to the fullest. Don't let the small things pass you by without you noticing them and cherishing them. Everything comes to an end.

Enjoy the entire process of life, and enjoy the the day after.

VACATION

Heading out of town for about a week to Branson Missouri. Yes I am going to take in some shows...but the main reason for the week of getting away is to refresh. No better place to do that than the woods. The place we are staying is in the Ozark Hills on Table Rock Lake. Yea should be a great time with the family and really looking forward to connecting to God in a real way.

Please pray for the family. We are really looking forward to this trip!

Start the list today with Anberlin and the new album titled New Surrender. The new album further established Anberlin's signature sound. Distinct vocals and solid guitar tones make this one worth getting.

You have to check out the new album from James Taylor titled Covers. Fans have been waiting for this one for years. It was recorded live with an awesome group of musicians. It is a collection of tunes made famous by artists like Buddy Holly, The Dixie Chicks, The Temptations, Leonard Cohen, George Jones, and Eddie Cochran. Taylor makes each tune his own. Check it.

If your looking for something a little different look to Robin Thicke and the new album titled Something Else. On this album you will find a little Rock, R & B, and blues. Strong, crisp vocals and unique arrangements will send this album up the charts. Check it.

American Idol finalist Jennifer Hudson has a new album out. A few strong songs with powerful vocals makes this cd one that will get noticed. This cd has a soulful-style with some great arrangements.

Bungee Cords

Sunday was a crazy day, it was our LFA Church Picnic. Morris Ivey who pastored for many years at LFA came and spoke. We had a full house, which was great.

Because of the stuff going on at the park, we did not lead today. Consumed 217 did a great job. It was unusual to have a day off and to be at church. Did not feel right at all.

The picnic was great, thanks to a ton of great volunteers.

When Good People Leave

I have experienced this recently and it really hurts. You have someone close to you that helps fulfill the vision that God has given you and they leave you. I'm talking about someone that you have trusted, given ownership to, and given access to.

When this happens we have a few choices:

Get hurt; blame them; and protect ourselves from this happening again
Allow the moral of the team to decline and the hope of the future to be lost
Think that God is done using you
Trust God even through difficult times
Expand the team around you, don't depend on a small few to accomplish the ministry
Expand the vision for the ministry, each person is a part of the picture

No matter what you do people will bolt on you. No matter if you are T.D. Jakes or you can sing like Bono, or you can lead worship like Chris Tomlin, people will leave. Each time a person leaves, God is in the picture doing someone we don't understand. Every time I have been through a time of subtraction, God has multiplied something inside of me. I choose to grow through these times. I could complain and feel down for myself, or I could grow into the leader God is wanting me to be.

Let's start with Kings of Leon. Their new cd titled Only by the Night is great. Unique sounding rock with some great vocals. Check them out if you are looking for a little different rock album.

This next worship album will rock your face off. Lincoln Brewster is a beast on the guitar and it really shows what he can do on his new cd titled Today Is The Day. Great vocals, killer guitar worship, what else could you want?

Check out Nevertheless. Strong rock with vocals that are serious. A tone of great guitar tone and everyone loves a little dropped D (diffe

rent guitar tuning for you none guitar players).

Check out Downhere. It's a folk inspired rock album. They are not well known, but I think this new cd is going to change that.

Late Sunday Update

So it's Tuesday and I am just now blogging about Sunday. I went out of town after service and stayed away from my MAC on purpose.

Sunday was a our Fall Small Group Launch day. We released our new Small Group Study (Which I worked on till 2 am) and released our new Small Group Guide. Andrew did a great designing it and the layout was sweet. Pastor's message was all about Small Groups. We had all the groups at the back of the sanctuary at the tables with sign-up sheets. It was a great Sunday and a ton of people signed up.

How He Loves killed...I mean it's a sick worship song. We had a few musicians out, but it was a great Sunday with the team.

We are taking off the next 2 Sundays. This is for 2 reasons: I think musicians need a break and a time to be feed, and I need a break and a time to be feed. I usually only take one Sunday off a year, but I am changing that this year. Our team will be refreshed when we come back after our break. A great group will be leading worship the next 2 weeks.

I don't think leaders take enough time off. Most leaders can't take off because their team can't run the show without them. We must keep a healthy balance between carrying the weight of ministry and being refreshed. It's so easy to be burned out and ready to quit.

I encourage you to say no to some good things to say yes to the right things. Say yes to family, and to being refreshed.

Run-Down

Here's what has been going on:

I have not been avoiding my blog, just crazy busy.
I have been editing 6 - 20 minute small group videos this week. Must be finished by Sunday, I'm not even close yet.
Lead worship this morning for a bunch of Pastors. I think they are the hardest crowd to lead into worship.
Gordon Ramsay is my hero. I hope to be him one day.
I'm glad SNL is back on, and Tina Faye was a great Palin.
Michael Phelps can't read a teleprompter.
Forced complements kill me. It's like the conversation comes to a place where there is nothing left to say then you hear "worship was great, great job, really great job". I appreciate kinds words and I love to give them, but people are smarter than you think they are and if you are going to complement others, make sure you own it. Mean what you say, or don't say it.
Looking forward to getting out of town on Sunday with 11 other guys and watch the Cowboys game and playing golf at Tour 18.
Other than this guy, Rick Dubose may be the best communicator I have heard live.
I think everyone should get an iPhone. Apple has completed my life outside of Jesus, Amy, my boys, golf, coffee, music, Kurzweil, Turbosound...

New Tunes Tuesday

Check out Wayne Brady's new cd titled A Long Time Coming. Yea really, he has a cd out and it's not all bad. He can sing and I really like the arrangements and style. Preview it before you buy, it is Wayne Brady...

Check out Leona Naess and her new cd titled Thirteen. This cd takes you through all kinds of emotion and styles. You will not be disappointed by this one.

Check out 33 Miles. You will find creative writing and unique arrangements on this cd. It's one

that stands strong in the midst of not so good Christian music. Check it.

Another solid release for Rush Of Fools. Their new cd titled Wonder of the World lives up to the success of this group. Good mix of well produced arrangements and strong lyrics. I have liked this group for a while and this cd confirms that.

Alright, I missed this one last week and I feel it's worth bringing up this week. By now you have heard a few songs or even downloaded this one. I'm talking about Jessica Simpson.

Now I'm not a country fan, and I don't listen to a ton of vocal slides, but overall I would have to say she pulls it off. I think some of the tunes are not great hits, but she can fill the role and she has some strong vocals.

Now with all that said, you won't find it in my playlist, iPhone or iPod. That's just the way I role.

Sunday Update

Sunday service was a very unusual one around here. Most of Longview did not have power due to IKE. My house did have power and the church did as well. So we had service. Me and the other 99 people that attended enjoyed God's presence! We were missing a ton of people, and my team was a thin one for sure. We had keys, bass, drums, and three vocals. God still showed up!

With such a small group of musicians it was difficult to pull of some of the new arrangements. So I lean to do some "older" songs.

Pastor still brought the message, as he always does. He spoke about When Good People Fail. Good message that has been brewing in him all week. We had a good conversation about how with such a small crowd it can be difficult to full be ready to minister. For some reason you feel like without your full team you will not have your full impact. God is teaching us that we do what we do for Him, no matter who is in attendance. That's a lesson I am still learning.

IKE did a ton of damage all around Longview and Texas. Please pray for the efforts of all who are helping restore power and drinking water and assisting in anyway they can. It will be a long time till Longview fully recovers, just think about those towns by the coast.

We believe that in all things God is in control. We don't know why things like this happen, but during these times we chose to trust God. He is our source and He is our help.

What You Do When You Are Sick.

So I have been sick a few days this week. The kind of sick that I am afraid to be far from the throne if you know what I mean. It's been hard keeping anything down. Amy has been great taking care of the family with Karson being sick she has been busy. I missed rehearsal last night and it doesn't feel right at all. It's been a hard long week.

I started feeling weird Saturday, but I just thought it was nerves because I was speaking Sunday. Sunday afternoon I slept and I don't remember much from that day. Monday I went to work and after staff meeting we ate Mexican which I think did me in. We will not go into further details...

Here's a list of things you do when you get sick:

1. You get really grouchy and winy

2. You forsake all responsibilities (sorry Andrew)

3. You don't care to blog (sorry no New Tune Tuesday)

4. You watch CSPAN for hours because you don't want to watch Soap Operas

[Correction: My wonderful, loving wife Amy does not watch them! She watches me put my size 10 foot in my mouth. Thats what she watches, not Soap Operas...]

5. You have to eat the worst tasting food...Soup (why does it matter what I eat, I'm going to throw it up in a few hours anyways)

6. You start to get a little gloomy

7. You realize how great it is to get out of bed and go to the office

8. You realize how great your family is for taking care of you

To all you sickos like me, we must stay together.

It can be hard out there for a gimp.

Today was an unusual Sunday. Pastor was out of town hunting, and I was asked to speak. I really enjoy speaking, but it is something that doesn't come easy to me. I have to really work up a message and the delivery could use some help! I prepared for 25 minutes and ended up speaking 47 minutes. Yea I went a little long for me, but that includes my "political" talk.

Worship was so good today. We had the full band back and it really made such a difference. I am so blessed to have a great team!

Amy did such a good job on Lead Me To The Cross. She is such an anointed singer (I'm not just saying that because she is my wife). Worship just keeps getting better! I am loving what God is doing at LFA. Every Sunday I am humbled by what God is doing.

Today I spoke about Community. We all are created for community, and we all need it. Here's a few of my notes:

God knew what Adam needed so he gave him community.

Community forces us to Quit Quitting.

Community takes a ton of work. We all have been hurt by someone and our natural response is to make sure that doesn't happen again. Fulfillment is found when we choose to share our lives with others.

People will find out the good, the bad, and the ugly about us. They will see our faults and weaknesses. Then they will look us in the eye and say I love you...that's the most freeing thing. That's what Christ has done for us and that's what we need to do for others.

Who knows your junk? We are scared of accountability but we are not scared enough of the consequences of our secret sins.

The power of the gospel is not in how well you can tell the story, the power of the gospel is us living it each day of our lives.

Don't cold-call the gospel trying to convince others they need to buy what your selling. Share your love for Christ in a real way and make sure your life backs up your words.

It's About To Hit The Fan...

It's been a long week even with having Monday as my non-Laboring Day. With the start of small groups soon and the production of our small group videos looming next week...I'm feeling it.

Sunday I am speaking at LFA. You need to be there, not because I have a great message or because I'm so great...but because God is going to mess us up. That's right, He's going to get into our life's and shake things up.

In honor of the DNC & RNC and the great ability of Palin and Obama to deliver a speech, I tried to install a teleprompter for my message on Sunday. All I ended up with was a projector shining in my face. Now all I see is stars...

I have always said that I think messages should be around 20 minutes. Maxwell says if you speak more than 30 minutes you are repeating yourself or you don't know what your talking about. I got about 15 minutes so far. It will turn into 25 minutes when I get some quiet time today to finish it.

Tomorrow night I have a great opportunity to play with some great musicians for a wedding reception. We will be playing some top 40 love tunes including some Sinatra. It pushes me out of my comfort zone, and makes me practice...I mean, more than I already do practice.

Pick up Chris Tomlin's new cd titled Hello Love. It's got some great tunes including the radio hit "Jesus Messiah". I have really enjoyed the song Love, the Watoto Children's Choir sings on this track and it's amazing. Check it out.

Next check out Michael Feinstein's new cd titled The Sinatra Project. Great voice with some great Sinatra tunes. You and your spouse will like this one...

Check out Brian Wilson's new cd titled That Lucky Old Sun. You will know him from The Beach Boys. He is known as the one of the greatest song writers, and this cd supports that. Worth checking out.

Water baptism was so powerful today! 3 awesome stories about how God has changed their lives. One of the best lines was, "I want to wash away the old me and bring one!" We made videos of their stories then we all watched them being baptised live. We really had a reason to celebrate today!

We went straight into worship after the video's and the water baptism and it was awesome! Here's the worship list:

I felt the Lord leading us to pray for each other. It was an amazing sight to see everyone in the service turn and pray for each other. It was a special time for LFA.

Piano driven rock is what Remedy Drive is all about on the new album titled Daylight is Coming. This group is committed to sharing Christ with others through their music. The lyrics are strong and solid and the music and arrangements are incredible.

Decemberadio's new album Satisfied is a little laidback and radio friendly than the groups last release. But it will not disappoint by keeping the signature driving guitar and strong lyrics you are used to. They received Rock Album of the Year and this album shows you why.

Check out The Verve's new release titled Forth. Individually, the Verve are all great players. Singer Richard Ashcroft has been called the greatest singer in the world behind Coldplay's Chris Martin. It's a strong rock album that will do well. You will like the arrangements and the vocals.

B. B. King returns to his roots with this new album titled One Kind Favor. You don't get much better than this fun, blues rock cd. You get a true feel for his personality by the choice of songs and emotion you feel. This is one to get.

We celebrated Kaden's birthday yesterday in Dallas, and we got home pretty late last night. So I was so tired this morning, after 3 cups of coffee and almost an hour of vocal warmups I headed to rehearsal. By the way, we start rehearsal at 8:00am.

My son Kaden turns 4 next week. We are having a party for him in Dallas on Saturday. Amy said tonight on our date that time has flown by. I said at first that it seems that it has not, but I remember like yesterday trying to sleep in a hospital room before he was born knowing that my life would never be the same.

Adore every moment you have with the ones you love. Thanks to my awesome parents, I was able to spend some alone time with Amy tonight. I noticed myself living in every moment. I noticed the small things about being with my wife. The way she laughs, smiles, gets nervous, gets embarrassed when I make a fool of myself. It was so great to act like we were dating again.

Go and adore each moment. Even those difficult ones that we want to end quickly. Those times make us who we are, and who we are makes us special to others.

I have taken some time to process my thoughts. It is still being confirmed about the Mike Guglielmucci story about him faking cancer. He's the author of the great song "Healer."

Here's what I know, check out this article and this article. I know that the video's of the story from Hillsong were removed from You Tube last night. I know that Integrity removed the website that promoted the song on the new Hillsong CD. Guglielmucci was quoted in the article that he admitted it.

We do this song and the church loves it. I even told the stupid story before we sung it one Sunday. I just get so angry about junk like this. I hate that credibility has been lost. Here's the fact: it's still a great song and there is such truth in the song and power in the song. And yes I will keep singing the song, but I will take a break for a while from it.

I do hope that he is getting help, real help. That's what he needs. What kills me is that we can put such a focus on the person that has written or performed a song or sermon. It's so easy to lose focus on who the song or sermon is making famous.

It's not the first time this has happened, and I know it won't be the last. We are never as strong as we think we are. All of us are in need of the grace and love from God and none of us deserve it. We just need to not base our worship or encounters with God because of a song, story, or person. They will all let us down. We all have our favorite songs that we feel close to God when we hear it or sing it, but we all need to make sure our worship steps past those songs.

One last thing, I am amazed how God uses people despite their selfish actions and desires. This is so powerful to me. I know that this song is anointed and being used by the Lord to build faith and hope in many. I know that the dude was inspired by the Spirit of the Lord to write this. I know God uses man even with all our faults and failures. I know this because He uses me every week.

The questions keep coming in, so here goes the second round...

I usually work 40-50 hours a week.

A usual week includes the office, meetings, rehearsals, and services. I am off on Fridays and Saturdays which seems to give some the feel that I don't work. Fridays are my chill days. I try to play some golf, do some yard work, hand with my family. Saturdays are usually my focus time during the late afternoon and evening. I don't hang with people, try not to go out, or stay up late. I review the service cue on Planning Center and get things ready for Sunday. So yea I hope that answers the question.

No I don't chart my music.

I get worship guys asking me about this all the time. So here's a great way to answer it... There are so many great resources that many guys never use. I used to chart everything, I'm talking about a detailed chart. It would take some time, but it sure made things easy for the band. Well, now I print my charts from CCLI. Get it, learn it, and use it. I will change a few things for my arrangements, but the charts works well.

My Drink From Starbucks...

That's a good question. When it's hot, I always get a grande iced caramel macchiato. When it's cold I stay with a extra hot white chocolate mocha.

Why Don't I Talk About My Family More?

I try to...I have the BEST wife and boys! Amy does a great job posting pictures and stories about our family on her blog. Check it.

I am a private person. I know you may role your eyes, but I like it that way. I'll get better.

Whats the buzz about social networking?

I get asked this often. Social networking is a fancy way of saying cultivating relationships online. Like blogs, twitter, Myspace, Facebook, Virb... The list goes on. We need to be thinking of creative ways for using social networking for communicating the gospel, and keeping in touch with our leaders. Like using twitter, blogs, and skype instead of meetings. Sign me up!

Why Do You Blog?

That's a good question. It's sure not because I have such great things to say...and it's not to promote my newest CD or Book. I blog to communicate ideas, share strategy, and develop relationships, and now I feel I need to give something worth reading to my 50 or so guest each day. By the way, thanks for reading.

Lets get starting today with This Beautiful Republic. I have been waiting for this full album to be released. It's full of great lyrics and some great guitar arrangements. It's strong and you should check it out.

You have got to check out Jimmy Needham. He's got such a unique sound and is a great songwriter. "Firefly" has to be my favorite song on the album, but they all are strong.

Next is one of my favorite song writers, David Crowder. It's a new/old release titled "Remedy Club Tour Edition". Some new stuff with some old stuff with some new arrangements. It's David Crowder and you need to get this one. Enough said.

For all you Hymn lovers, check out Bart Millard (front man for Mercy Me) new cd "Hymned Again". Strong vocals with some great songs.

If you mix Jeremy Camp, Daughtry and Kelly Clarkson you get the sound of Brooke Barrettsmith. A little rock with an edge. You may like this one.

In a really weird way, I feel like my Sunday post have become more like an onion. An onion?

Sunday was great! Every Sunday feels like its getting better. We peal off a new experience with the Lord every week. Worship was so different, but so good.

Pastor read a passage from Psalm 73 that was incredible. It was all from chapter 73, but the focus was verses 25 & 26.

Whom have I in heaven but you?
I desire you more than anything on earth.
My health may fail, and my spirit may grow weak,
but God remains the strength of my heart;
he is mine forever.

Pastor was right on today and it made me so proud to be a part of LFA. I have already received so many good emails today about the service, and more will come. God is real and he cares about you more than you will ever know.

Only those who have attended a service at LFA will understand this, today Pastor included Bryan, Andrew, and myself in the blessing at the close of the service. It was really difficult for me say something that was meaningful for people. But as awkward as it was for me, I will never forget that moment. It was so special for me.

Be blessed as you go your way this week, and let the light that is in each of us shine for Christ and let us not be ashamed to share the love of Christ with someone this week. Don't be distracted by the simple things of this world, but be focused on what God is calling each of us to do: love one another.

I have decided to open up and answer a few personal and ministry related questions. I get asked the same stuff often so I am going to use my blog to answer them. So sit back and enjoy.

No I don't pay any of my musicians or singers or audio and video guys. This has to be the one I get asked all the time. This is a fine line in the church world. There are a few reasons why I don't pay:

I am only asking for 5 hours of work each week. Most of us spend that much time watching TV in a day. (Thanks for the Olympics)
I am more concerned about the heart than the hand (ability).
I don't need to. Which is a great way of saying, the team that is here with me is incredible.

Now before you role your eyes and send me a email, let me tell you when I think its right to pay:

When you need to. There is no one in your place that has the skill that is needed. Its right to pay someone to take you to the next level. Remember good musicians want to play with other good musicians. So you pay one to come, more may follow.
It's the culture.
You are at a level when you have to. I only know a few that are there, but you might even have a few guys full time working with you.
You just want to. To each is his own and you may be able to and may want to.

Yes I go to Starbucks often. Not just for the coffee, or the wifi, but for the experience. Yes I have bought into the experience and I love it.

I really enjoy hymns. I get a ton of emails about the music we do, and yes I am for real when I say that I do hymns. I have been a part of places that never do hymns and I think they are missing something, and I have been in places that only do hymns and they are missing something. I'll rock with anyone, and I'll sing some hymns with anyone as well.

Yes I am really competitive. Thanks to Joe, I hate losing. I really hate losing. I play golf with a lot of different people, and I love beating them all. You know what I am talking about Carl...

Warm Bodies

Recently I was asked to be a part of something and I said yes. It was one of those questions that you know you should say no to but I ended up saying yes out of guilt. I followed through with my commitment and it was not all that bad, but the point is how and why I said yes.

I work with people, lots of different kinds of people. You probably work with people as well. If your involved with a church, chances are you get asked to do things, often. I have written down how and why I have asked people to fill positions at our church. Some of them are no brainers, the ones I like, but I am at my best when everyone is saying no. What do I mean? We currently have one position that needs a leader, not just a warm body to take a ministry in a new direction. Everyone I have ask has said no. Two things come to mind: one is are you asking the right people, the other is have you prayed? Check yes to both and now we are moving on.

The next time you ask someone to do something, stop and ask yourself why. Why am I asking this person? Have they ever showed any interest in the area I am asking them to help in? Are they are leader or a warm body?

Instead of putting a warm body who is available to fill a hole, match the opportunity with the gift and calling. I have found it is a longer process and you have to fight for it, but it will be worth it every time.

It's out and you need to stop what you are doing and get it. Download it, go and buy the cd. Hillsong "This Is Our God" is what I am talking about. Healer, Desert Song, Stronger, You'll Come, are just a few that will smack you in the face. This is one to get, now.

Yea its a little gospelish...but you should check out Mike & Kelly Bowling. A husband and wife team that has some great harmonies. Any singer will enjoy listening to this one, if you can get past a little Southern Gospel.

I just found Krystal Meyers. She has a few other albums out, but this single is a fun track. Look for the full album next month.

Sunday Update

Wow what a full weekend! My Sis and her family came in town on Saturday and I got to squeeze in a quick round of golf. Even though I did not play very well, it was great to play.

Missed Pastor Carter today, but Bryan did a good job filling in for him. Today was a good message about seeing things for what they really are. Its easy for me to blow things out of proportion. I heard a ton of good things after the service about how good the message was.

I am still amazed at what God is doing. Our goal is to be used by God and see lives changed. He has been doing both. I heard today that a few weeks ago during worship a guy accepted Christ. Right in the middle of our worship, a life was changed! God is AMAZING!

Next week all the team will be back together. That's the great thing about the month of August, people will squeeze in one last trip before school starts. I'm not upset, maybe a little jealous...

How do you respond to criticism?

I have been learning this lesson for the last few months. In many different areas I have experienced welcomed criticism and not so welcomed criticism. You learn a lot about yourself when someone throws up in your face. They spout their thoughts about everything you do and don't do and expect you to just take it.

I'm not the kind of person that takes it well. I find myself wanting to be defensive and explain the why of everything pointed out. Usually the person who just threw up on me doesn't care. It almost seems that they start to walk away before they even finish.

The best is when someone will send you an anonymous letter. I just find it so funny how someone in the "body" of Christ will send a letter telling you that you do everything wrong and you need to change it but they won't sign their name. My Pastor has a great rule. Any letter or even email that does not have a signed name on it we trash it. I am going to start a poll and see how my readers want me to destroy these letters. I think that would be fun!

Anyways, you see what you are made of when you experience this. What foundation are you standing on? The one you think is so strong (talent, ability, creativity, uniqueness, connections) will crumble and wash away. Only standing on Christ will we continue to see the Kingdom of God established here on earth.
I have had a inner struggle the last few months. Part of me wants to run. Not just walk, but run. Run like Forrest till I can't anymore.
The other part wants to grow. I know I go through things to file down my sharpness. I know God's hand is on me and I don't want to move myself. The only moving that's going to happen is by the Spirit of God. I know so many guys who leave when it starts getting hot.

Sunday Update

Great service today. I am amazed at how different each Sunday is. It was so powerful last week, and this week is was just a little different. I really felt that we as a body needed to wait on the Lord. We can get in such a hurry to have an encounter with God and expect him to move when it's good for us, but I think the Lord is pleased when we slow down and put him first.

Today was Communion Sunday, it was so special. I just love how we honor the Lord during Communion.

Stretched

This week I have been stretched. In so many areas, in so many ways, I have been stretched. The most difficult thing about this week is believing that this is good for me.

During times like these I feel I am right where I need to be. I feel the Lord's hand on me. I do question everything during weeks like this. "What am I really doing?" "Am I accomplishing anything that really matters?" "Is this really worth it?"

When was the last time you felt stretched? When was the last time you attempted something that was bigger than you? When was the last time you said, "Lord without Your help this will not work".

We had another great service this past Sunday. It was a little different as far as the message goes, but I think that can really be a good thing.

God has really been showing up in our services. This Sunday the team did such a great job. I am so thankful for each person, we have something special going on. It was the first Sunday of the month which means it was a Communion Sunday. Those are becoming my favorite.

What burns inside of you? What do you see happening that kills you when you see it?

I ask myself these two questions all the time. Back in the day I did a study with a great friend about pride. The study lead us to the main thought that we must be in control of our motives. Our motives will lead us to do strange things.

What burns inside of you?
What is it that drives you? Is it competition? I have a healthy amount of competition because of my older brother. It still drives me to this day. I think thats all good, but it can be really dangerous. When our motive changes from I want to do my best to I want to be the best, Watch out...

What do you see happening and it kills you when it does?
This happens a lot around me. I see it all the time, the way a guest gets greeted, the way a Pastor gets treated, only calling people when you need something from them, the way we handle the simplest things. You find what you have a heart for when you ask yourself this question.

Vision is something that needs to be a focus for everyone. Don't chose to just trod through life seeing what might happen. Know what your are pursing and plan each day to step toward it. People are searching to follow someone with vision. I believe Christ gives us vision to lead people to him. Who are you leading?

New Tunes Tuesday

Got a great list today, got a little for everybody.

First lets start with John Mayer. Hes got a new live cd out with a lot of well known songs and some not so well known. He is a beast on the guitar and his tone is incredible. The energy on this live recording is great. You may want to think about downloading this one.

I have followed this band for many years and the new record does not disappoint. Check out Relient K and the new cd "The Bird and Bee Sides". Great name and a good one to get.

You have to check out Los Lonely Boys new cd titled "Forgiven". Same great sound and harmony with some new surprises. They are best known for the song Heaven. I think they might have some new great tunes on this record.

A few to look for this summer are Lindell Cooley's music conference live recording. Last year he released 2 cds both live worship. It doesn't get much better than that.
Hillsong is going to release a cd late August. On this record they are supposed to have Healer on it. If you don't know this song you need to iTunes it. We have been singing it at my church for a while now and its so powerful. Its from Planetshakers record from last year, but its now starting to get known.

Sunday Update

Great day yesterday! I know I am saying that on every Sunday Update, but our services just keep getting better and better. Worship was so intense. One first time guest told me that they have never felt the moving of the Spirit like that before. They said they enjoyed the service and would be back. Thats my prayer, they mentioned how powerful the Spirit was. Not how good the music was (and it was so good yesterday) and not how good the message was (Pastor really brought it) but how powerful the Spirit was. Thats when you know it was a good day!

After service I had a meeting communicating the vision and purpose of the music ministry. It was a great meeting and people have really responded to the vision. It was a defining day for me. I am so proud to service Pastor Carter, and this church.

Everything does not revolve around you. I'm sorry to tell you that. I know you might be confused by how convenient things have become.

Online banking, direct deposit, fast food, iTunes, web cams, DVR or Tivo, Chili's now offering to go service that they bring to our car so you don't have to get out, Starbucks, Walmart opening 4 lanes during the busy times, Coldplay (sorry I am listening to them so I had to mention them), Sonic happy hour.

Most of these things make our life easier. It can even give us a mindset that things need to be done our way.

The church is not done your way, at least a healthy one. If you don't like the lights, stage, sermon, music, foyer, parking lot, bulletin, screens, the piano not on the stage...then pray about it and get over it.

Start serving others rather than having the mindset others need to serve you.

New Tunes Tuesday

Got a great list today, its a good day for new music. Today is a rock heavy list.

First lets start with Kutless. The new record titled "To Know That You're Alive" is not a let down at all. Kutless really knows how to bring it. This is a must have. One review on this cd is "I listened to it and I almost pooped my pants." Good stuff.

Next I want let you know of a group that has a couple of great recordings already out. Check out the new release from Manafest. They have a great mix of rock and hip hop. The new cd is titled Citizens Activ.

Check out Lincoln Brewster's new single "Today Is The Day". Great guitar tone and strong vocals is what Brewster is know for, and he delivers. This is a great uplifting tune, and what I have heard the cd is going to be the same.

Check out another strong recording from Shinedown. They have stayed true to their sound and have some great new songs. Songs like "If You Only Knew Me", and "Call Me" are what have made this group one to download.

To close the list check out Seabird. A great rock album with solid lyrics. Its a good mixture of pop and rock with some great arrangements. Its worth checking out.

Good Sunday, and a even better afternoon. We had a guest speaker today and a little different service. Gary Bell was our speaker because he is in town for Campmeeting this week. So today we did a little bit of older music because of that.

#3 - What “old song” must I stop singing to make room for something new that God wants to place in my heart?

Every church planter is going to face this issue one day.

You see, when we first began NewSpring Church we were all about not being “traditional.” We were going to “break the mold.” We used phrases like “taking EXTREME risks” and “not afraid to die” quite often around here.

But here we are eight and a half years later and I am finding myself in quite a pinch because…

The traditions that we are now having to attack are the ones that I helped to develop. The ideas that we are now calling “outdated” are the ones that were once a brand new thought in my mind.

Honestly, there are times when I have been in a meeting and have wanted to halt the conversation because, well, to be honest, I didn’t like what was being discussed. It was tearing away at what I had shed hours of blood, sweat and tears over…but…God has been slowly showing me that I must celebrate the songs that we’ve sang…but I must always be open to the fact that He wants to do new things.

Is there anything in your church that was once a good idea that isn’t anymore?

We’re hitting this hard…and it’s tough for me…but I know it’s going to be awesome in the end.

He REALLY brought this home for me when I read Isaiah 43:16-19…

“I am the LORD who opened a way through the waters, making a dry path through the sea. I called forth the mighty army of Egypt with all its chariots and horses. I drew them beneath the waves, and they drowned, their lives snuffed out like a smoldering candlewick. But forget all that–it is nothing compared to what I am going to do. For I am about to do something new. See, I have already begun! Do you not see it…”

I should CELEBRATE all that God has done…but ANTICIPATE that He is going to do more and be willing to change ANYTHING that He needs to change.

I’m asking Him to “put new songs” in my heart.

Since I missed last week, I got some extra choices for you today.

First lets start with Coldplay. You can pick up the entire album today. Its great, and I'm enjoying it more than I first thought. Give it a chance.

Check out Anthony Evans cd titled "The Bridge". I really enjoy the arrangements on the worship songs most of us sing every week.

Check out Jon Foreman's new release Summer. This is the latest release from the Switchfoot frontman. Its acoustic driven songs with straight forward lyrics.

I'm digging Katy Perry cd titled "One Of The Boys". You will find the song "Ur So Gay" on this cd. Good stuff and a good change of pace.

I had to get Dizmas for pure rock. Sometimes I just need to feed the rock in me. I know its hard for you to believe that, but this album will rock your face off.

And to end the list today I have to add Chris Tomlins new release Jesus Messiah. So of you may feel like you don't need or want more Tomlin in your life, but this song is going to be sung in many churches very soon. Its just easy to sing and worship to.

You Said What?

Life throws you funny things sometimes. Like a few letters that were written to your boss about you and how you are letting them down. Yea I just said that. Through many thoughts that I have had that I can't share on this kid-friendly blog...Andrew pointed this out from Scott Hodges blog. I wanted to share this with you.

"Who are we willing to offend?"

Someone just asked me, "How can a church embrace diversity without offending someone?"

My answer: "I don’t think it can. Everything a church does will offend SOMEONE. I think the question has to be, 'WHO are we willing to offend in order to reach the people we're called to reach?"

That's what she said.... :)

Weekend Update

I just want to start by saying that I have the best father. He has been such a great example to me of how to be a good father. He has been caring, supportive, encouraging, and someone I can always count on. I hope that I can make the impact in my boys lives the way he has made an impact in my life.

We had a great service today, Pastor really brought a great message. He are some of the highlights.

Train up a child the way he should go.
1. Fathers need to instruct.
- in personal growth; in personal skills; how to dress; good work ethic; Spiritual skills
- teach your children how to pray
2. Fathers need to inspire
- always accept your children; show approval often; encourage Spiritual growth;
3. Fathers need to involve
- play with your children; make time alone with each of them; pray with them
- show interest in the things that matter to them.

He closed with stating the health of our children depends on our relationship we have with our wife. They will respond to others the way we respond to our wife.

Worship was a little different today, my bass player and guitar player were both out. I didn't have time to call anyone else, so it sounded a little empty to me today. I did play the bass on my keyboard, it was a lot harder than I thought it would be. But I felt so free today and the presence was so powerful today.

We did lot of needy songs today, but I just felt that it was right to do. I Need You More takes me back to hearing Lindell live. Amazing.

Yes it was a country song, but it was the best country song I have ever heard.

Long Week

I just want to say thanks for all the visits to my blog and you are still finding that I have not updated in a while. To all of you I say thanks. I know that some of you have thought about not visiting anymore, but thanks for giving it another shot.

Long week at District Council, but a good one. I got to network with other worship guys (some of them are really weird). I hope they don't check my blog...
Great messages this week from Rick Dubose and the Doctor himself. Dr. George Wood.

I took so many notes and I won't tell you them all because you don't care about them all, but the only thats so simple but powerful. "Healthy ministries start with healthy leaders." Rick Dubose. Killer!

Weekend Update

Weekend update coming at you strong.

Saturday we went and lead worship at The Burn in Tyler. 2 hours of worship was great. I had some problems with keyboard. Someone transposed it down 5 steps, punk. It was not a digital keyboard so I couldn't just push the button. So the first 30 minutes was me trying to get my brain working. Jason was giving me a hard time about it, but I got it figured out and worship was great.
Saturday afternoon we went to alleyfest. Yes Longview has one alley and in that alley we were having a party. They had some great stuff for Kaden and I always enjoy looking at all the art that I can't afford. We didn't stay that long because it was so hot. Thats why I love living in Texas!

Sunday we had a guest speaker and a full service again. Heres the worship list:

My bass player Jeff was out of town but Andrew did a great job sitting in with us. The guest speaker wanted to use a powerpoint presentation along with his message. The problem is that our setup we use Media Shout and we run dual monitors. Well Media Shout does not like Powerpoint and we couldn't just use Powerpoint because we run 2 monitors. One for preview and the backdoor program and one to display the screens. It was a very tough day for the video team. We now know what to begin training on.

This week my family and me are in Waxahachie for District Council. Our whole crew is here, Pastor Carter, Andrew, and Bryan. Its a week of meetings, networking, services and more meetings. All my favorite things.

This morning was the missions golf tournament. We shoot 4 under par, but did not place in any of the flights. That seems to happen a lot to us.

The Burn

Me and my team will be at The Burn this Saturday from 10 am - 12pm. 2 solid hours of music and devotion. I am proud to be asked to be part of The Burn. Once a month there is 24 hours of worship and prayer in Tyler. Check the website for more details. I can't wait to see what God has for us this weekend. I will put up pictures of the experience.
